When you work in a noisy environment and you also have a coworker who is loud and annoying, you probably often find your office life to be a nightmare. Excessive noise in your office can make it that much harder to meet the requirements of doing your job well.
Here are 10 ways to deal with noisy coworkers. Not all will work, but there should be an option that will satisfy everybody’s need for a peaceful work environment. The main point is, something must be done or the problem could escalate to bigger issues.
The first thing you can try to do is to discus the office noise problem with the chief offenders. Sometimes this is all that it takes as they may not realize the how disruptive they are being. If all else fails, have a frank discussion with their manager. Generally they can effectively deal with the situation.
If you’ve tried this to no effect, then maybe it’s time to consider bringing in Human Resources as a third option. The bottom line is that unless you are in business completely by yourself you have to know how to work with others. Human Resources can really help in resolving the conflicts between coworkers that lead to unpleasant work environments.
A fourth choice for handling office noise is to close your office door. If you work behind a cubicle, of course this won’t work for you, but telling other people to move to another area should help. If speaking to them about this doesn’t do anything, then a fifth choice is to send an email and also a copy to the employees managers to explain how you feel and the reason that less noise will cause everybody to be more productive.
If email isn’t an option, the sixth way would be to send a memo. Again, send to the offender, their supervisor, or even post it anonymously (all names omitted of course) on a company bulletin board where the subject may get some discussion. Some people are naturally louder than others and they may not realize it until it’s discussed and they’re really paying attention.
There are a couple of other ways to deal with noisy coworkers. This involves changing the office configuration so that the noise makers are moved further away from you or that your space is moved to a quieter location. While you might not be able to succeed in doing this, it surely will bring the noise problem to the attention of those in a position to do something about it.
Another potential solution for drowning out office noise is to invest in your own white noise machine. These come in many varieties, some providing serene choices such as ocean waves or rainfall. It might just be the thing to allow you to concentrate when noisy coworkers get to be distracting.
Finally, the last option is to initiate a non-aggressive conversation with someone. It is likely you are not the only one to notice the problem, and if enough people sincerely believe there is an office noise problem, the more input you have, the closer you are to a solution. Perhaps a casual coffee and donuts ‘noise intervention’ could be a starting point.
