Make the Most of Slack With These Handy Tips

[ad_1]

Slack is a real-time communication tool to keep teams connected. Some of our internal employees and account managers work remotely – so Slack keeps all of us connected in ways email and other tools or platforms can’t. It allows us to communicate and collaborate with each other one-on-one or in teams.

It’s also a great tool for sharing news, trends and brainstorming.

Slack is more than just a messaging tool. With so many features and integrations, it should become a must for any team and digital marketer.

Here are 7 handy tips to help you make the most of Slack:

CREATE CHANNELS

You can set up channels for your various teams, departments, clients, office locations, or any way that helps you organize and prioritize your messages.

Want a channel to share the latest cat videos or a channel that’s strictly for team meetings and priorities?

You can create them in whatever way makes you most productive and what fits your culture or goals.

SEARCH MESSAGES

As one of Slack’s core features, you can easily search all files and messages.

Sometimes channels move so quickly so advanced search options make it easy to find what you were looking for quickly. If you thing someone already asked or answered the question you have you can easily search past conversations.

You can read more about how to search in Slack here.

CREATE REMINDERS

Want to be reminded of something? In Slack, enter /remind into the text box and then enter the task you need done and when you need it done by and Slackbot will remind you. Example: /remind [someone or #channel] [text] [some description of time]. Tip: Make sure you use date use MM/DD/YYYY when typing out dates.

REACT WITH GIFS

We’d be lying if we said we didn’t love GIFs and one of our favorite parts of Slack is it’s Giphy integration. All you have to do to get your GIF party on is type /Giphy [phrase, word, any text] to respond with a random GIF.

OPEN AND CLOSE FILES

If your channel has a lot of GIFs or other “noise” you can simply type /collapse to collapse all the files shown in that current channel. To make the files reappear just type /expand. This is helpful if you’ve missed a lot of posts and want to cut down the files to just see the messages.

CREATE TO DO LISTS

You can star items within Slack to mark it as important. Move your mouse over the gray star and select to turn it yellow. You can view all your starred items to see everything you marked as important and an easy to view on the go to do list. You can also use the star feature as a bookmarking tool to save and easily recall important and frequently used messages or files.

AUTOMATE TASKS THROUGH IFTTT

If you connect your IFTTT account to Slack then you can automate pretty much anything and everything. You can automatically share things you saved to Pocket to a Slack channel or add notes from Slack to an Evernote. Browse through all the Slack “recipes” and add in your favorites.

Slack also has a ton of other API integrations to connect with your to-do lists, screensharing tools, GitHub, Dropbox, and more. What are some of your favorite Slack features or integrations? Let us know on LinkedIn!
